Plant Care: Alocasia Amazonica and Alocasia Polly
The Alocasia Amazonica and Alocasia Polly originate from the Amazon forest. They are relatively similar in all aspects, except in shapes. The Alocasia Polly species has smaller leaves as compared to the Alocasia Amazonica. These home plants can give your home a fresh vibe, but you have to be a bit cautious because these plants are a bit sensitive compared to other home plants out there.
Fertilizers as Boosters
In using fertilizers, do not go for the pellets type because these tend to damage the quality of soil and the roots of the plants. Instead, they use of liquid fertilizer is highly suggested. Feed these plants with this fertilizer once a month. During the cold season, or if the plants are dormant, you can skip using the fertilizers.
Light
These plants are not into direct light. Since these are from the rainforest, they love the idea of being covered under the shade of trees or other bigger plants. At home, make sure that the plant is not exposed to direct sunlight. Putting it near the window with curtains will be a good and possible spot.
Location
Putting your Alocasia plant in a greenhouse is the best idea. But if it is not available, inside your home may also work, specifically in the kitchen or bathroom. This is for the reason that these places are more humid as compared to other areas of the house. On the other hand, you may also group your plants to get the humidity that keeps them happy and healthy.
Soil Requirement
The Alocasia Amazonica and Alocasia Polly love moist soil. The pot where these are planted is supposed to have holes so that the draining function can work well. This can avoid the rotting of the roots caused by the constantly wet soil. The use of peat-based soil with perlites is the recommended type of soil.
Temperature
Suppose the room where you plan to put your alocasia is airconditioned. In that case, I highly suggest that you look for another spot because this cold temperature can make your plant hibernate and eventually die. Alocasia is sensitive to too cold and to too hot temperatures. The best place where they can be positioned is where there is an actual room temperature.
Watering Guide
The rule of the thumb in watering Alocasia Amaroniza and Alocasia Polly is to make sure that the soil is moist. Check if the first twin inches of the soil is dry or wet. If it is dry, then it is time for some watering. Avoid overwatering and soaking the plant since these actions can lead to the deterioration of the roots.
Is it TOXIC?
The Alocasia Amazonica and Alocasia Polly are toxic to cats, dogs, and even humans. This is because of its insoluble calcium oxalate that can cause burning of the mouth and other areas. So, be sure not to put your plant in a place where your pets or toddlers can reach it for safety precaution purposes.
The Alocasia Amazonica and Alocasia Polly are indeed beautiful. Though they require much attention compared to other plants, seeing their vibrant green leaves grow and expand brings delight and satisfaction.
